When the knee muscles are inflamed, swelling may be eminent after a long period of inactivity like when you first wake up in the morning. The swelling makes your skin look red and warm when touched.
Buckling and locking
Over time, you knee muscles may weaken due to the constricting pain and the entire joint structure may become unstable. It is really unexpected. You knee joint may stick or lock up and you can’t bend or straightened it out. Instability of the joint will be more and more prominent with time. Joint becoming stiff all of sudden which will result in instability and inability to bend or straighten the knee.
Cracking or popping sounds
Arthritis of the knee is caused by the lack of lubrication that helps bones from grinding. You may hear cracking or popping sounds often coming from your knees. It can occur when smooth cartilage that smoothen range of motion is lost. The sound of cracking and popping comes from rough surfaces and bones grinding when your joints move.
Poor range of motion
When your knee starts making weird popping and cracking sounds, your range of motion will automatically slow down a notch. It will be a total challenge for your knee joints to glide over as they should. Previous simple movements will be difficult and even impossible especially when climbing stairs. When it gets worse, you may even need a cane as a support to walk around.
Deformities of the knee
It is common for people with arthritis to have deformed knee. As the disease progresses, muscles and bones are getting out of place and even sunken from its original spot. Sunken appearance of the muscles is even visible as the knees get thinner and weakened.
In conclusion, symptoms of knee arthritis can be found initially with the abnormal pain coming from the knee after a period of inactivity. If you experience this, please be on the lookout and observe the level of pain frequently. If it gets worse, consult an expert to get proper advice.
